Explained

After making my first few pieces throughout summer of 2020, in around November, I began this series. All the pieces before were collages, and I distinctly remember sitting down and deciding to approach this Surrealism thing. The first piece, #007, is literally my raw interoperation of Surrealistic Collaging, and I view this piece as my natural curiosity in it.

It was literally as simple as, “Oh yeah, a mouth would look striking behind him,” followed by “and then this picture of cars, but I take out the road so they’re on the grass going towards him.” It’s that basic of a thought process that put me on this entire road, which I think says a lot about making art in general, (that sounds very dramatic, but it’s very true.) It’s this simplicity and freedom that got the ball rolling for me.

I liked how easy it was to make the pieces, both conceptually and literally, so I decided to continue on, viewing the whole thing as a stress-free practice whilst getting into this style. Deciding to continue, and make a point of using candid photos from my summer added a personal and nostalgic feel that I think is gathered by anyone who looks over the works.
